Sharon Laakkonen

Many of us have seen Sharon's beautiful creations adorn the pages of most (if not all) of the scrapbooking industries major publications. She "does" Prima unlike any one else and we all know her projects always look stunning. Each and every one tends to evoke a feeling of romance.

Sharon will be teaching this project on Saturday, August 9 in Florida (check the Prima Blog for more details) so we are only going to give you a sneak peek of her Build-A-Book today, but with any luck, she will share the rest of it with us in the near future! If you are one of the lucky ones in the area, be sure to sign up as this is one PRIMADONNA class you do not want to miss!

Tell us a little about yourself:

Besides being a wife to Bill for 23 years, I am also a mom to 3 giggly, but sweet girls, and 4 very energetic boys. Our family recently moved from Wisconsin to Kentucky to be closer to our oldest two daughters who attend college down here. So far we are loving the sunny days spent exploring the horse country!

How did you get started in scrapbooking?

I started scrapping before I had children, but gave it up for a long time and then started again about 5 years ago when a neighbor invited me to a home party. I totally fell in love with the hobby and actually work full-time now in the scrap industry. I also freelance for various magazines and teach classes for Prima when I am not scrapping with my three girls.

How would you describe your style?

I think I have a balanced, romantic style. It doesn’t matter what I scrap I seem to always sew on my projects, use flowers and include a touch of crystals somewhere! I love adding those personal touches to each one of my projects.

Where do you gather inspiration from?

The photo I am using usually drives my choices of paper and embellies...however, sometimes getting a new box of product inspires me like nothing else! I also love looking at Target, Gymboree, Anthropologie and other online sites for color and style inspirations.

What do you love about Fire and Ice designed products?

The Build-A-Book concept is very unique and so user-friendly! I love the fact that I can choose any page style that I feel like working with...add any others that I like...and everything will automatically work together without me thinking about it! The product line makes my job so much easier when completing a whole album.

Where can we find you?

I don’t have a personal blog because I spent a lot of time keeping the Prima blog fresh each day... you can always find my work posted there (www.prima.typepad.com/prima) and in my galleries at www.primamarketinginc.com. I also have a gallery at www.twopeasinabucket.com under my name. Once in awhile I will have publications in the major scrap magazines. I recently had layouts and cards in Scrapbooks, Etc., Creating Keepsakes and PaperCrafts.

Please list 2-3 inspiring techniques that you display on the work that you shared with us.

The Build-A-Books are perfect for use with some products. The clear factor is very intriguing for me. There are certain products that just SCREAM to be used on a clear medium! I find Prima’s clear tapes, Felt Matties and Say It In Crystals swirls the perfect embellishments to use on the BAB pages! They lend a totally different look on this style of album compared to a paper page. Try one of these products sometime and let us know how you liked it!
